In October 1953, an exhibition called “Sixty Years of Living Architecture: The Work of Frank Lloyd Wright” opened on 5th Avenue at 88th Street - where his Guggenheim Museum was under construction. The exhibition was Frank Lloyd Wright’s self-curated retrospective, showcasing his revolutionary career.
It ran for only two months but was hugely popular. Remarkably, it including a pavillion and a brick-built full-scale Usonian House, featuring furniture designed by Wright and his trademark open floor plan and ample natural light - the first Frank Lloyd Wright works in New York City.
More than a look back, the exhibition was a bold statement by an 86-year-old Wright, proving his enduring innovation. By blending Prairie School roots with mid-century modernism, it cemented his legacy as America’s architectural pioneer—radical, practical, and timeless.
This is a very rare photograph of the interior of the Usonian House, taken by the legendary photographer of New York. On the reverse, Abbott has written: “Frank Lloyd Wright – Temporary home on site of Guggenheim Museum – Berenice Abbott”.
Original vintage 8"x10" photograph, contact printed by Abbott herself and believed to be unique.
