Full title: "Philip Johnson and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, New York, May 11, 1955". Mies and Johnson are sitting on either side of a large model of their iconic collaboration, the Seagram Building in Park Avenue, New York City. Looking almost like the cover of a, LP, this was an astonishing portrait at the time in terms of subjects, composition and photographer, highlighting the recognition of architects as creative icons in their own right.
Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (1886–1969) was a pioneering German-American architect, widely regarded as a master of modernism. Known for his minimalist "less is more" philosophy, he designed iconic works like the Barcelona Pavilion and Farnsworth House, profoundly influencing architecture with clean lines, open spaces, and innovative use of materials.
Philip Johnson (1906-2005) was a pioneering American architect and critic, known for his influential role in modern and postmodern architecture. His notable works include the Glass House in Connecticut and the AT&T Building in New York. Johnson's innovative designs shaped architectural discourse, earning him the inaugural Pritzker Prize in 1979.
