Like his contemporary and great rival Richard Avedon, Irving Penn was one of the foremost photographers of the twentieth-century, one of the few to bridge the oft-separated gap as both a fashion and fine art photographer, blurring the lines between the two practices. He was perhaps most inspired by Avedon, Cecil Beaton and Henri Cartier-Bresson. In his later years Penn also became a gifted platinum printer.
