Abstract depictions of the sand dunes at Oceano, located along the California coast about halfway between Los Angeles and Carmel, have become indelibly associated with the Weston family name. Both Edward Weston and his son Brett (1911-1993) made numerous negatives there and at the dunes in White Sands, New Mexico, and they were among the first to use these landscapes in the service of Modernist photography. Weston produced his first picture at Oceano as early as 1934 and returned to shoot there more extensively in 1936, when this picture was made. - Getty
