"Homunculus" is the alchemic notion that he head of a single sperm contains a fully-formed, miniature human being. This was a terrible idea even at the time, and very bad science. Playfully I decided to use it as the basis of a colorful oil painting incorporating a Leonardo da Vinci sketch of an infant in the womb, other human embryo images with a 2001 Space Odyssey feel, as well as some contemporary histological details derived from electron microscopy. I couldn't resist adding a bit of fresh salmon from Berkeley Bowl.
