In Ionesco's play "Rhinocéros" an entire town gradually succumbs to the lure of fascism. Inspired by Ionesco's cautionary tale, this painting appropriates the six figures from Bruegel's 1568 painting "Parable of the Blind Leading the Blind"; depicting them in various stages of transformation into half-man half-rhinoceros. According to the Gospel of Matthew 15:14, "if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch."
