Artist's Statement: The ocean and basin images in “Basin #13”—abundant, portending, and whimsical—emphasize the sea’s massive scale, rhythmic motion, and continuity. Like overfilled balloons, the basins reveal only a portion of their full shape as they loom over or pour into the ocean below. In this painting, I have drawn lines with an X-ACTO knife and then applied multiple layers of gouache and water washes, inviting the paint to pool and drip.
