Double Wedding Ring Quilt Pattern
- Hand sewn and painted wire mesh with imported beads
- Estelle Akamine
In celebration of the joyous rituals of weddings and married life, Estelle Akamine created a contemporary textile collection for the Wedding Room and Wedding Waiting Area.
Akamine uses the rich imagery and style of the American quilt to express love's labors, romance and fidelity. Traditional quilt motifs employed by the artist include the Double Wedding Ring, the Rose of Sharon, oak leaves symbolizing fertility and longevity, wreaths of flowers, and an old-fashioned pattern of hearts and four-leaf clovers invoking an old saying, "where there is love, there is luck." A contemporary variation of the wedding theme is a three-dimensional frieze of shoes and tin cans, indicating that another couple is "just married."
