The contrast between the natural and the artificial has always been an element in our work, developing it while being an AIRIE Artist during 2018. We explored the connections between nature and the diverse communities that make up the Everglades, through the concepts of natural, artificial, and control. We were curious about typical mass-produced sculptures depicting marine creatures, which are very popular among the Everglades communities as a home decoration. We sculpted our own mermaid, which functioned as a prop, symbolizing fantasy, a tragic figure, and the complex relationship between man and nature. It represented water, which is one of the biggest conflicts in the Everglades. We pictured our 'mermaid' in significant places in the reserve, locations that reflect the conflict of human control over water and ecosystem.
