Pitcher with missing pewter lid, 7.25 inches tall. Polychrome. Unknown maker. As many as four distinct patterns and 11 versions of this pattern were produced. All are variations of different shells as a brightly-colored decorative design, lying among red and brown tendrils of seaweed and other marine plants on a white background. Cockson & Harding or Charles Hobson and Thomas, John & Jos. Mayer were firms that produced the pattern. The original pattern engraving has been attributed to Jesse Austin, who was a prolific engraver of both his own designs and the works of other artists, which he adapted for the polychrome printing process.
