Trivet in silver-plated stand, 6.75 x 1.5 inches. Polychrome. Unknown maker. The impressed "66" suggests a manufacture date of 1866. As many as four distinct patterns and 11 versions of this pattern were produced. All are variations of different shells as a brightly-colored decorative design, lying among red and brown tendrils of seaweed and other marine plants on a white background. Cockson & Harding or Charles Hobson and Thomas, John & Jos. Mayer were firms that produced the pattern. The original pattern engraving has been attributed to Jesse Austin, who was a prolific engraver of both his own designs and the works of other artists, which he adapted for the polychrome printing process.
