Platter, brown transfer. Printed maker's mark for Holmes & Plant. This pattern features an ornate fence with panel and posts filled with geometric and stylized-floral designs. A profusion of daisy-like flowers grow upward behind the fence, while a small blooming prunus branch stretches upward in front of the fence. One swallow perches on the left fencepost, looking upward at three swallows in flight.
Holmes & Plant was an earthenware manufacturer at the Sylvester Works, Burslem, Staffordshire, England. The partners were Edwin Holmes and Ralph Plant. Previously Thomas Madew had been in partnership with them until 24 June 1884 when he left the business. Holmes & Plant were also recorded as being at the Waterloo Works in Hanley. They probably kept some interest in the works from the time when a previous partnership, Holmes, Plant and Whitehurst operated there. When Holmes & Plant ceased operation, the works were absorbed into the adjacent Nile Street works of Doulton & Co.
