Pitcher, 11.75 inches tall. Blue transfer with gilding. Printed maker's mark for Whittaker & Co. The Rd. No. dates the registration of this pattern to 1888. This lovely pattern features a large oval cartouche with a geometric border. The cartouche is filled with a countryside scene consisting of a stone bridge over water in the foreground, a cottage amongst trees in the middle ground, and a country village in the background. The cartouche is framed on the right by a curving spray of daisies. The border along the rim consists of repeated panels of a stylized flower and foliage and geometric medallions. The body of the pitcher is covered with sheet of gilded circles.
Whittaker & Co. was a brief series of partnerships of earthenware manufacturers, operating the Hallfield Pottery, built in 1882, in Hanley, Staffordshire.
