Plate, 10.5 inches diameter (26.7cm). Blue transfer with gilding. Printed maker's mark for Goode & Kenworthy. This pattern features several motifs placed around the well rim. The primary motif consists of two birds, likely doves, perched on a rustic wooden fence with a trailing flower bush. To the left is a low, squat vase filled with large rose- and peony-like flowers, foliage, and berries, with a butterfly hovering to the upper left. Above this motif is a small branch of berries jutting right into the well and at the top of the well there is a horizontal trailing vine with heart-shaped leaves and flower buds. The border consists of a repeated diamonds filled with simple, stylized flowers and bordered on top and bottom by additional stylized flowerheads. A simple gilded line completes the border.
In 1857 Messrs. Blackhurst & Dunning commenced the Tunstall Works for the manufacture of ordinary earthenware for the home and South American markets. In 1867 Mr. Dunning died, and the business was carried on by Richard Blackhurst alone until his death in 1877. After that it was carried on by Messrs. Goode & Kenworthy.
