Platter, 14 x 11.25 inches. Blue transfer. Printed maker's mark for Grimwade Bros. The Rd. No. dates the pattern registration to 1905. This border-only pattern consists of clusters of five-petaled flowers and leave on each edge of the platter, framing a puzzle-like background of blue shapes outlined with white lines.
Grimwade Brothers was founded by Leonard Lumsden Grimwade. Leonard had shown a natural talent for modeling pottery and it was in this field that his infant business began, in 1885. He was soon joined in the business by his older brother, Sidney Richard, another potter. They established their Winton Pottery (Stoke) in about 1886. A wide range of useful and decorative earthenware was produced. By 1900 new showrooms had been purchased in Stoke-on-Trent and London and the style became Grimwades Ltd.
