Saucer, 5.625 inches diameter. Brown transfer. Printed maker's mark for James Gildea. The Rd. No. indicates a pattern registration date of 1886. Part of a series depicting scenes from Daniel Defoe's novel "Robinson Crusoe," this pattern is divided into thirds, with a circular cartouche in the center. The cartouche features an image of Crusoe, with a basket hanging off of his back and a rifle in his left hand, standing in front of the kneeling Friday, who is reaching out to Crusoe with both arms. The bottom third of the saucer is fully filled with four irregular sections containing stylistic foliage patterns. The top two-thirds of the saucer contains a scene of palm trees overlooking a large expanse of water with a small boat and the sun emerging from a cloud in the distance.
In 1878 James Gildea joined the partnership of Bates and Walker. In 1881 Bates left the partnership and Gildea & Walker continued together. In 1885 Gildea continued the business alone. Around 1887 the business was carried on as Keeling & Co.
