Plate, 9.375 inches diameter. Brown transfer. Printed maker's mark for H. & Co., possibly belonging to Hammersley & Co. of the Alsager Pottery in Longton, Staffordshire, England and operated c. 1885-1932. This pattern features three motifs placed around the rim of the plate. The largest features a bird, perhaps a hoopoe, perched on a palm-like plant at the base of a rock placed in a watery setting with reeds. The other two motifs feature smaller birds, perhaps bee-eaters, perched on and taking flight from leafy branches.
