Plate, black transfer. This simple pattern features the eponymous cotton plant with blooms curving around the right side of the plate. A small winged insect hovers over the full cotton bloom. The left side of the plate features a segmented palm-like plant. "Cotton Plant" is very similar in style to the New Wharf Pottery Co. pattern "The Cotton Plant." The E. S. of the printed mark is currently unknown. The initials E. S. could possibly stand for E. Swann, who was in business c. 1887-1892 or Edward Steele of the Cannon Works in Hanley, c. 1875-1900.
