To Love Somebody is part of The Architecture of Becoming, a series exploring how our internal lives can take physical form through color, material, gesture, and experimentation.
Each of the six paintings in the series is named after a Bee Gees song that accompanied me during a breakthrough period in the studio. The songs became part of the atmosphere in which the work developed as I began moving beyond my established methods and allowing the materials to behave more freely.
The painting incorporates familial and locally sourced materials, including waxed thread, sewing patterns, Kodak slides, pieces of a silk kimono sleeve, antique maps, books, wallpaper, and my grandmother’s tablecloth.
