This painting was inspired by the actual backlit trees at Hunters Beach at sundown after I had spent a couple hours painting the cliffs en plein air. That small painting, "Low Tide at Hunters Beach", was a milestone of sorts, a demonstration of my interest in the more abstract forms the rocky cliffs can take here on the Maine Coast. This studio work is about the gorgeous contrasts in the lit surfaces at Golden Hour just before the sun dropped behind the westward cliffs.
