- Maria Gorton
Maria is a painter living and working on the lands of the Gundungurra Nation in the village of Robertson, NSW, Australia. Drawn to the notions of The Sublime, Melancholic Beauty and the Japanese Zen Philosophy of Sunyata, the void, she’s seeking to create a feeling of depth, mystery and ambiguity: a response to the unknown.
Maria obtained a Bachelor of Fine Art from The National Art School, Sydney then went on to complete a Master of Visual Arts and Master of Studio Arts (Honours) at The University of Sydney. During the course of her studies she partook in Artist’s residencies at The Red Gate Gallery in Beijing, China and La Macina di San Cresci in Chianti, Italy.
Her work has been selected as a finalist in The Wynne Prize, The Blake Prize for Religious Art, The Portia Geach Memorial Award, The Kings School Art Prize and the Into Light Exhibition, Southern Highlands. Her work is represented in Public and Private Collections globally, including The Sydney Children’s Hospital, Barclays Bank and The Cultural Association of Rural Reading Retreats, La Macchina Fissa, Italy, where she has a permanent Collection.
ARTIST STATEMENT – SOURCE
"I have always painted instinctively, third hand on brush, seeking Source. Working with the intuition of non-duality, of oneness. Beyond the underlying sense of self. The vibrant, unbounded consciousness.
No need for conscious reasoning. If you touch the earth, she will touch you back."
