The Martyrdom of St. Stephen, 17th century, oil on linen, 53-3/4 x 38-1/8 in.; fine gilt wood Florentine leaf frame, 62-1/2 x 48 x 2-3/4 in.
Provenance: Carlo Bianchini, Orvieto, Italy, purchased in 2014; The Estate of Dr. J. Clayton Davie and Family
Note: Many versions of this subject were similarly addressed in the 17th century by Italian artists. Several elements such as the dramatic display of the central figure of St. Stephen, the overpowering and violent depiction of those who are stoning the Saint, and the angels with the awaiting crown and branch, symbol of martyrdom seem close to the composition by Cigoli.
