(French, circa 1575-1616)
Mary Magdalene in Ecstasy, inscribed verso "Magdalena", oil on copper,

An evocative 17th-century oil on copper painting depicting Saint Mary Magdalene in a state of divine ecstasy. With her head tilted back and eyes closed, she clutches a wooden cross, symbolizing her intense spiritual connection.

The radiant halo surrounding her head emphasizes her sanctity, while the inclusion of a skull and an alabaster jar in the composition serves as a reminder of penance and mortality.

The artist skillfully uses vibrant colors and meticulous details, particularly in her flowing hair and draped garments, reflecting the rich tradition of Italian Baroque art.

25-1/2 x 19-3/4 in.; black lacquer frame, 30-5/8 x 25 x 2-1/4 in.
