Inspired by a photograph taken during the 1956 Royal Australian Navy Hydrographic Section Antarctic expedition at Nelly Island, off Casey Station. Among the landing party is Mr Phillip Garth Law (1912-2010), Director of the Antarctic Division, Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions (ANARE).
The 25-foot work boat ‘MACPHERSON ROBERTSON’ (affectionately known as ‘LOLLIPOP’), was named in honour of the philanthropist, Sir Macpherson Robertson (1859-1945).
Assumed to be lost, the beautifully restored MACPHERSON ROBERTSON boat ‘resurfaced’ in Valentine, New South Wales – south of Newcastle, on beautiful Lake Macquarie.
In 2019, two of the original expedition photographs were among the items donated to the Naval Heritage Collection by Mr Kevin Slade, formerly of the Royal Australian Navy Hydrographic Service.
