MessageCollection: Whispers From The Silence Exhibition
Do you ever stand in nature and get a feeling of awe and wonder; a sense that everything around you is thrumming with life and love? THAT’S some of what I’ve tried to capture here.
When I began working on the art for this exhibition, it was all about capturing that felt sense. A feeling of being held by nature, welcome, invited in, embraced.
Pieces from 2022 through to early 2024 focused on this, inspired by time spent in several Australian deserts, the Kimberley and Cape York. This work was created using acrylic and mixed media abstracted landscapes, and collages built on botanical monoprint foundations. Mid way through 2024 the magical techniques of eco printing and encaustic wax coalesced into a series of gentle, softer pieces. The underlying feeling of nature whispering to us was never far away.
As time passed, the work – and my relationship with the theme – slowly shifted, as Whispers From The Silence began to offer me a new perspective. The deaths of my parents-in-law, only ten weeks apart, reminded me of another kind of Whisper From The Silence – the inexplicable experiences that leave you wondering about the things we can’t explain, but which feel very real. We found birds showing up in unusual places at significant moments – you’ll find it easy to recognise the pieces created in response to these “whispers” in the exhibition.
The art in this exhibition is an expression of the things I hear when I listen to the silence. Sometimes it’s the Earth - the land, the trees, nature herself - other times it’s the energy of messages coming from places we can’t explain. It’s always about the things we sense, but cannot see.
Silence is an entity. When we stop to listen, it offers us peace, healing, calm, life and vitality. The more we treasure the silence, the more treasure it has for us.
