I found this image of a mermaid adorning a letter ‘I’ in a twelfth century manuscript which was probably, according to Rodney Thompson’s catalogue of the manuscripts, made at Lincoln Cathedral.

The original image was not gilded – the addition of the white gold tail with inscribed scales, 24 carat gold hair, green gold fish and border are my own.
