Polar bears are extraordinary creatures and a true symbol of the Arctic's natural beauty and resilience. As the largest land carnivores, these expert swimmers can swim across 60 miles of icy waters without rest, while their translucent fur helps them blend seamlessly into their snowy surroundings. Adult males can reach a weight of 1600lbs so their high-calorie diet mainly consists of seals, and their incredible sense of smell allows them to detect prey from nearly a mile away. Polar bears are crucial for maintaining the Arctic's biodiversity and ecological balance, and they hold deep cultural significance for Indigenous peoples. As indicator species, their health reflects the state of the Arctic ecosystem.
As with much of my work, the final process involves carefully placing symbols that intersect cultures, objects, and moments in time. These clusters are my way of searching for balance—within the piece and within myself—amidst a chaotic world. It becomes a visual prayer, distilling complexity into a hopeful narrative of harmony and connection.
In this painting, I organized these symbols inside the shape of an iceberg. as icebergs and sea ice disappear due to climate change, polar bears struggle to find stable platforms for resting and hunting. This forces them to swim longer distances to reach solid ice or land, which can be exhausting and dangerous, especially for young cubs. The loss of sea ice habitat significantly impacts their ability to hunt, leading to nutritional stress and declining populations.
Today, polar bears serve as powerful symbols of climate change, reminding us of the urgent need to protect our planet.
