MessageDid you know frogs are also facing a pandemic of their own?
This piece was initially inspired by the current plight of frog species around the world. Through some research, I learned that they are threatened by climate change, the loss of natural water landscapes, and an amphibian pandemic known as Bd, which is spreading like wildfires throughout several populations of frogs across the globe. The fungus manifests via skin lesions and redness and is responsible for condemning hundreds of other amphibian species to decline or extinction.
This painting started in the weeds with little hope in sight. It is hard to absorb the reality of us humans facing a pandemic, let alone learning that frogs have been dying at alarming rates for the past 5 decades due to a deadly fungus.
However, as I completed this piece, I have been pleasantly surprised by the daily sounds of thousands of frogs I now hear in a nearby pond. I have seen them in the pond as well and they appear healthy. While I know the threats will continue, I am encouraged that healthy ones still exist, and after reading several research papers about this, I do have hope that science and research are on this.
These creatures may have a chance, after all, to thrive again and get out of the weeds!
The white is indicative of disappearing frogs.
