Did you know frogs are also facing a pandemic of their own?
This piece was initially inspired by the current plight of frog species around the world. They are threatened by climate change, the loss of natural water landscapes, and an amphibian pandemic known as Bd, which is spreading like wildfires throughout several populations of frogs across the globe. The fungus manifests via skin lesions and redness and is responsible for condemning hundreds of other amphibian species to decline or extinction.
This painting started in the weeds with little hope in sight. It is hard to absorb the reality of humans facing a pandemic, let alone learning that frogs have been dying at alarming rates for the past 5 decades due to a deadly fungus.
The threats continue, however, the daily sounds of thousands of frogs indicate many are healthy and thriving.
These creatures may have a chance, after all, to thrive again and get out of the weeds!
The final process of completing my work often involves meticulously organizing symbols that intersect cultures, objects, and events. These clusters represent a quest for balance within both the artwork and my mind amidst global challenges. It is a symbolic journey or a form of universal prayer I embark on to distill the complexities of our world into a hopeful narrative that celebrates harmony and connection.
