Steiff is a German toy company founded in 1880 by Margarete Steiff, which became famous for creating the world's first stuffed bear with movable joints, the "Bear 55 PB," in 1902. Despite being diagnosed with polio as a child, Margarete used her skill as a seamstress to start a business making felt animals, beginning with an elephant pincushion. The company's nephew, Richard Steiff, designed the first jointed teddy bear, and another nephew, Franz Steiff, invented the now-iconic "Button in Ear" trademark in 1904 to distinguish their products.
