Skookum dolls were commercially produced in Missoula, Montana, beginning in 1913 by Mary McAboy, who created them to portray a stereotypical image of Native Americans. Initially made with features like dried apple heads and wool blankets, production evolved through different materials such as composition and plastic heads, and they were often sold as tourist souvenirs until the 1960s.
