Bartholomew was martyred and skinned alive, crucified, and then beheaded.

"An Israelite indeed in whom is no guile" (John 1:47).
He worked as a missionary in India, Mesopotamia, Arabia, Armenia.
He is usually portrayed with a knife or a piece of his skin, as legend has it that King Astyages of Armenia had him flayed alive and then crucified and beheaded.

Pictured here:
Shows Bartholomew having been flayed alive.
It is quite deliberately that P.B. uses details in his portrayal of the Apostles - Enlarging perhaps one detail, as in the St. Bartholomew window, where he only shows an arm and part of the shoulder.
