This vessel is from the Hopi tribe in Arizona. The Hopi have distinctive clay wares that can change color during the firing process. Gray clay can create a yellow finished ware, and red clay can result in a red finished ware. The Hopi consist of three Mesas, the Hopi-Tewa being the ones that produce the standard Hopi ceramics. In this particular vessel, the finishing on the clay is a tan and orange color with black painted designs on both the front and back. The black paint is sourced by boiling Bee-weed for a long time until it is a dark color. It is then packaged into cakes and wrapped in a corn husk to be used later. The design on this particular vessel is consistent with the work of the lost and abandoned Sikyatki tribe. The bottom of the vessel is signed "Donna M. Adams, Tewa-Hopi."
