This vessel comes from the Santo Domingo tribe in New Mexico. The ware is consistent with other tribal ceramics from surrounding areas, for example, the colors are similar to those seen in Jemez ceramics. The artist, Alvina Garcia, has been creating pottery using classic Santo Domingo methods since the 1970's. This includes using vegetal or mineral paints on the locally sourced clay. In this particular vessel, the exterior is painted in a creamy white and black natural design, and the bottom and interior remain a terra cotta red. The bottom is signed "Alvina Garcia, Santo Domingo, N.M."
