This wee 5 x 7 inch oil on canvas barely even warrants being called a study. It is merely a sketch - a painting doodle that became trapped on a small canvas that was near my painting palette when I finished working on a larger painting. But my dear sweet husband happen to wonder by and go "leave it alone, I like it." Reluctantly, I set it aside with a shrug. But later as I was going about chores after spending the morning reading I look at it again. I am still musing about how these bits of paint applied in a certain random fashion can capture and hold our imagination. Even without the title, I think most people would discern that it was a seascape complete with seagulls. Yet, there is not one individual brushstroke by itself that would lead to this conclusion. It is rather, the collection of brushstrokes and this artist who thought about the sea as she applied paint to canvas. So, this small painting remains as half formed abstract-thought sketched onto canvas.
