Arts Etobicoke asked me to create a wall design for a poem that Dionne Brand, Toronto’s poet laureate at the time, was writing on Article 13 of the UN Declaration on Human Rights for the Urban Canvas project for Amnesty International. The design was a particular challenge due to its horizontal expanse. I wanted to evoke the poignancy of Dionne’s words while showing movement, water, borders, and freedom clearly and compellingly.
