We "can't not" think about CORONAVIRUS—we have had a lockdown, kids are homeschooled, projects and jobs have evaporated, and people are getting sick, dying, and recovering. Even as New York improves, the rest of the country is falling into a new struggle with the virus. At the same time, I couldn't help thinking that the COVID-19 particle's microscopic images were mysterious and beautiful. I created a CORONAVIRUS shape in clear mylar and used dichroic vinyl scraps left over from other projects. Inside the form, I played with the pieces to tell a visual story of the chaos that our country has fallen into—states collapsing under the pressure of a mysterious virus, a public health crisis, a crisis of racism, violence, and anger. The circle shape represents beginnings and endings, the sun, movement, defense against chaos, and pure form, but inside is chaos and hope; that is where I am right now. Peace and turmoil and hope for the future—not sure.
