Rutherford Birchard Hayes (Oct. 4, 1822 – Jan. 17, 1893), born in Delaware, Ohio, served as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives after fighting in the Civil War. In 1868, he served the first of multiple terms as governor of Ohio. Hayes primarily was responsible for establishing The Ohio State University. In 1877, he became the 19th president of the United States (1877 to 1881). He died from an attack of angina pectoris a few months after his 70th birthday.
