James Abram Garfield (Nov. 19, 1831 – Sept. 19, 1881) was born in Orange Township (now Moreland Hills), Ohio. In 1862, Garfield was elected to Congress as a representative from Ohio’s 19th District and in 1880 was elected to the U.S. Senate. In 1881, Garfield became the 20th president of the United States, but his presidency was short-lived. Garfield was shot by Charles J. Guiteau on July 2, 1881, at the Baltimore and Potomac Railroad station. He died 11 weeks later and is buried in Cleveland.
