Great Blue was inspired by Ridgway Colorado's heronry situated across the highway from Ridgway State Park. This mosaic marks the emergence of the artist's signature technique, described as “painting with glass”. Her ultimate objective is to convey the overwhelming beauty, grace, and elegance found in the natural world. By painstakingly cutting each piece of glass to utilize the colors, patterns, and textures already present in the material, she creates mosaic works that show movement, light, and detail not often possible with traditional mosaic methods. Her use of irregular grout patterns helps to show perpetual movement and lead the eye through the piece as well. Sue enjoys including an occasional healing stone, mineral, resin, or shell to her mosaics for their healing benefits. Her methods break the rules of classic mosaic technique while celebrating the absolute perfection we can find in our “imperfect” world.
