Sue is a full-time fine mosaic artist. Currently, she's working with hand-cut stained glass. Her artistic expression dates to her childhood, when she would sneak off into the woods with sketchbook in hand to record her impressions of nature. Later she studied fine art at the University of Illinois and commercial art at the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts. Mosaic as an art form didn’t find her until 2020, when the Covid pandemic ended her business of 20 years and she began meditating daily for inspiration.
Dreaming of bits and pieces of unknown material coalescing into graceful birds gave Sue the impetus to find books and YouTube videos about mosaic art. She began teaching herself, and soon found her passion for the art form irresistible. A lifelong love of dance feeds Sue’s fascination with the portrayal of movement and grace through a rigid medium. Her mosaics are constructed for longevity and moisture resistance, most often using cementous substrates and stained glass.
Sue's signature technique emerged with Great Blue. She revels in choosing each small piece from a large sheet of glass, selecting just the pattern, texture, and color needed to convey the beauty she sees in her subject. Using grout lines as an added design element, she breaks the boundaries of traditional mosaic technique, revealing a new look at an ancient art form.
