The foot of Matanuska Glacier is a couple of miles away from our viewpoint at Long Rifle Lodge, Mile 103 of the Glenn Highway, in the Chugach Mountains one hundred miles northeast of Anchorage. The peak of Mount Wickersham is shrouded in low gray clouds. Painted in the waning light of an early fall evening. In the fading light, there are dark spruce trees in the willows on the crest of the ridge in the foreground -- the artist clearly remembers the difficulty of seeing those spruce trees and getting them into this painting. See detail image. / Strip frame is painted black alkyd oil paint. Also see a quickly executed oil sketch of this view, SG-2010.
