“The country schoolhouse up the hill from the end of the farm’s long driveway is a theme I have painted several times. It represents memories for many of us who have attended country school and is an important part of our South Dakota history and heritage. This image shows my mother as the schoolteacher posing in front of the school house with her students
in about 1941. I attended that school as a first and second grader along with my siblings until
consolidation brought a yellow school bus down the driveway instead.”
