Carl Grupp earned a Bachelor of Arts in painting from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design in 1964. In 1965 he traveled through Europe and studied at the Art Student Vrije Academie in The Hague, Netherlands. He went on to earn a Master of Fine Arts in printmaking from Indiana University in 1969. From 1969 until 2004, Carl was a professor at Augustana University in Sioux Falls, chairing the art department from 1986-2002. Carl founded the Eide/Dalrymple Gallery at Augustana University, with an ambitious exhibitions program and permanent art collection, which is now named for him.
