“To capture the rich hues and abundant textures of the prairie landscape, I use vivid colors and expressive line work within my paintings. I may begin an artwork by first drawing with a piece of paraffin and then painting over these waxy lines with watercolor. This wax resist technique creates textured lines which characterizes the earthiness of the land. Other times, I draw with a marker pen or charcoal pencil after I’m finished painting. By outlining both positive and negative shapes, I create new visual relationships within the composition. These connecting lines suggest our inter-relatedness to our landscape and brings into focus our responsibility as God’s stewards to this fragile prairie ecosystem. As you view my paintings, I encourage you to ‘follow the lines’ to see the landscape in a new and boundless way.”
