This quilt with its 34 appliqué and stitchery illustrations and two apple quotes was made as a gift for the quilter's mother. The references here are not only to apples, apple pies, apple cores and apple cider but also to real and mythical people associated with apples including Eve in The Garden, Sir Isaac Newton getting bonked on the head by an apple, the son of William Tell (Swiss National Hero of Liberty) with an apple and arrow on his head, and Johnny Appleseed. Apples, harvested late in the year and being amenable to long-term storage in cold cellars, were an important addition to the diet in the high plains of southern Colorado where Dorothy grew up during the long years of the Great Depression. In winter they were the only fresh fruit available, with all other fruits and vegetables coming from cans and jars back then.
