Low Tide Fury was painted on location at Fish Haul Beach during the First Annual Hilton Head Plein Air Festival in 2026. Executed under unseasonably cold conditions, with sustained winds and gusts reaching 31 mph, the piece reflects both the physical challenge of the environment and the dynamic energy of the landscape itself.
I was drawn to this site by the rugged character of the rocky island and the striking chartreuse grasses extending from the shoreline—elements that offered both structural interest and a vivid color contrast. The intensity of the wind required a highly physical approach to painting; at all time, I steadied the easel with one hand while mixing and applying paint with the other. This tension between control and instability became an integral part of the process, ultimately influencing the mark-making and overall movement within the composition.
While these conditions were far from ideal, I approached the experience as an opportunity for artistic growth—an intentional effort to push beyond comfort and deepen my responsiveness to place. Completing the painting within a ninety-minute window, I left the beach both physically taxed and creatively invigorated.
The resulting study captures the raw energy, mood, and immediacy of that moment. It stands as both a record of the experience and a foundation for potential future work, as I consider developing a larger studio painting that expands upon this scene, possibly incorporating figures to further convey the shared human experience of the landscape.
Piece is offered unframed.
