My interdisciplinary practice investigates the social and linguistic constructs that shape identity, history, and collective memory in the United States.
MessageThis work confronts the "Broken Windows Theory"—an idea linking minor disorder to escalating crime—by presenting a fractured, partially shattered window embedded in a decayed wall. The muted yellows, stains, and layered surface evoke neglect, yet the real-world legacy of this theory is not benign decay but harmful policing practices. As NPR notes, its flawed application has disproportionately targeted minority communities, criminalizing poverty and leading to tragedies like Eric Garner’s death in 2014.
