Shelby Little is a figurative painter from New Orleans, Louisiana. She graduated from the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts in 2009. After studying at Massachusetts College of Art and Design in Boston for a year and spending an exchange semester at Queens College in New York, Shelby returned home where she received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of New Orleans in 2014. She has been an artist-in-residence at Azule in Hot Springs, North Carolina and will be attending a residency at Arteles Creative Center in Haukijärvi, Finland this summer.
I paint as a way to investigate the human experience, to understand my own spiritualty, and process the world around me. I attempt to tell stories through intimate snapshots of my characters. My portraits are created by linking together memories, dreams, and ancient mythological stories. I use personal photographs of myself and close friends as models and piece-meal together additional source material as I come up with new ideas in the painting process.
I’m drawn to paintings that are vibrant and textural and try to achieve that with my work. I typically work on canvas or paper; building up layers of acrylic paint before incorporating oils, gold leaf, and sometimes glitter.
All works on this site are available for purchase on either my Where Y'art profile or my Art-in-Res profile (direct links are connected to each piece). I will donate 20% of sales purchased on either platform to a rotating group of local mutual aid efforts.
