The Line 5 pipeline originates in Superior, Wisconsin where oil from the tar sands region of Canada and North Dakota Bakkens is either refined at the Husky Refinery (where an oil storage tank exploded a few years ago), or transported within either in Line 5 or in multiple other newer pipelines which traverse Wisconsin on their way to Chicago and beyond. The amount of oil infrastructure adjacent to the Nemadjii River and within a couple of miles from Lake Superior is staggering, and poses a huge risk to the surrounding waters and twin ports communities.
